Cancer cells are endowed with the capability to reprogram cell metabolism in order to support neoplastic growth and cell death escape. A key role in this process is played by signaling pathways, mainly cascades regulated by kinases. Integration of survival and death stimuli occurs on mitochondria, where many of these signals converge to the regulation of a channel, the permeability transition pore (PTP), that triggers mitochondrial depolarization and release of pro-apoptotic factors from mitochondria.
