Two of the most important issues in wireless systems are addressed: channel estimation and channel coding. The frequency domain channel estimation techniques are used to estimate the channel in a WiMAX system (standard IEEE 802.16e). In the same system, Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes are proposed and perform quite well. In this thesis decoding techniques for these codes are studied: a modification to the Message Passing Algorithm (MPA) is proposed in order to reduce the number of multiplications. Then two alternative decoding methods for LDPC codes are explored: the Priority First Search Algorithm (PFSA) and the Genetic Algorithm (GA), which transform the decoding problem into a search problem.
