Trame digitali. L'immagine cinematografica in pixel tra narrazione, estetica e tecnica

The main object of this doctoral dissertation is to analyse the relations between film language and new digital technologies, investigating the principal developments that have occurred as to the film narration, the aesthetics of representation and the various technical aspects concerning the film industry. Besides an introductory chapter which mostly emphasizes the content and the method of the analysis, four different thematic sections may be identified. In the first one, a special emphasis has been given on the development and the radicalization of narration in digital cinema. A tendency towards autobiographical and diaristic story-telling, along with the growing presence of a “narrating I” as a condition of development of the filmic text, are the most relevant aspects that have come to light, namely as to the analysis of the remarkable works of Agnès Varda, Alain Cavalier, Jonathan Caouette, Joseph Morder. At the same time what we have tried to demonstrate is how the digital environment has favoured a tendency towards multi-narrative tales, a characteristic connected in a way with post-modern culture as Atom Egoyan’s, David Lynch’s, Peter Greenaway’s and Lars von Trier’s works highlight. As to section two, we have investigated the changes of the coordinates of time and space that have occurred in narrative films due to digital technology. A renewed relation with the real space was also found, showing how important is not to limit the digital storytelling to a form of mimesis of reality but to also look for a further formal expressive key as to the image composition. In this way, the works of Abbas Kiarostami, Pedro Costa, Amir Naderi, Jia Zhang-Ke, Lav Diaz proved themselves particularly valuable. The third point of this research has focused on the development of the aesthetics in filmmaking as to new technologies, looking at the processing of digital color correction of the images and to the modifications that allow to create a totally new visual look from the original color range of the raw materials captured during the shooting. In order to this subject, much weight has been given to the comparative studies of some works by comparing the original materials of a movie with its final version after the color correction. The three works that have been examined are Aleksandr Sokurov's Russian Ark, Giorgio Diritti’s Il vento fa il suo giro, and Salvatore Mereu’s Sonetàula. The final section in this research deals with the relationships that exist among the different phases in the entire life of a film - from the very first idea throughout production, post-production and distribution to end with film storage and analysis. Besides the increasing trend of film productions made entirely by means of digital cameras, also a quite new mode of fruition of and interaction with the film, based on many digital facilities as to hardware and software, is now arising. Film relocation and cross-mediality reveal themselves as the symptoms of a new way of conceiving the film work as to the spectator. Moreover, the methods of film archiving and film studies have also changed, introducing a new relationship with the film itself mediated by the use of digital components, as demonstrated in particular by the study of the Padua based Microwave-Network company’s WonderCube (storage software) and the Institut de Recherche et de l'Innovation of the Center Pompidou’s Lignes de Temps (film studies software).La tesi analizza il rapporto tra linguaggio cinematografico e nuove tecnologie digitali, andando ad osservare i principali sviluppi in relazione alla narrazione filmica, all’estetica della rappresentazione e agli aspetti tecnici della filiera cinematografica. Dopo un capitolo introduttivo in cui si sono esplicitate le principali linee guida della tesi e le scelte metodologiche applicate, si è entrati nel merito della ricerca, andando ad individuare quattro differenti articolazioni di studio. Nella prima parte della tesi si sono messi in evidenza gli sviluppi e la radicalizzazione della narrazione nel cinema digitale. Ad emergere sono state una maggior propensione verso un racconto di carattere autobiografico, una narrazione diaristica ed un recupero dell’io-narrante come condizione di sviluppo del testo filmico, come si evince dai casi trattati tra i quali si segnalano le opere di Agnès Varda, Alain Cavalier, Jonathan Caouette e Joseph Morder. Si è inoltre dimostrato come il digitale abbia favorito una tendenza alla multinarratività, una caratteristica questa influenzata anche dalla cultura postmoderna, ed evidente nelle opere di Atom Egoyan, David Lynch, Peter Greenaway, Lars von Trier. La seconda parte della ricerca è stata dedicata alle modificazioni delle coordinate di tempo e di spazio prodotte dal digitale nell’ambito narrativo cinematografico. È stato riscontrato un rinnovato rapporto con lo spazio reale in cui emerge l’importanza di non limitare la narrazione digitale ad una forma di mimesi della realtà, intervenendo in chiave espressiva sulla messa in quadro dell’immagine. In tal senso, di particolare valore sono sembrati i lavori di Abbas Kiarostami, Pedro Costa, Amir Naderi, Jia Zhang-Ke, Lav Diaz. Il terzo punto della ricerca si è concentrato sugli sviluppi dell’estetica cinematografica in relazione alle nuove tecnologie, osservando le modalità di elaborazione digitale e di color correction dell’immagine, modificazioni che consentono di rielaborare profondamente la gamma cromatica dell’immagine ottenuta in fase di ripresa. A tal proposito, molta importanza è stata data allo studio comparativo di alcune opere, mettendo a confronto i materiali originali relativi al girato del film con la versione finale dell’opera stessa, successiva alla fase di color correction. Le tre opere analizzate sono state Arca russa di Aleksandr Sokurov, Il vento fa il suo giro di Giorgio Diritti e Sonetàula di Salvatore Mereu. Un’ultima articolazione affrontata da questa ricerca è inerente alla relazione tra i diversi momenti della filiera cinematografica, intesa come insieme di fasi che vanno dalla creazione, alla fruizione, alla conservazione e all’analisi dell’opera filmica. È emerso come, all’avvio di produzioni cinematografiche realizzate interamente con il supporto di videocamere digitali, abbia corrisposto in breve tempo la nascita di una nuova modalità di fruizione ed interazione con il film, che proprio sui software digitali basa molte delle proprie possibilità. La rilocazione filmica, la cross-medialità emergono come sintomi di un nuovo modo di concepire l’opera cinematografica da parte dello spettatore. Inoltre i metodi stessi di archiviazione e di film studies sono cambiati, introducendo un rapporto con l’opera anche in tal caso mediato dalla componente informatica, come dimostrato in particolare dallo studio del software WonderCube della società MicroWave-Network di Padova in merito all’archiviazione, e del software Lignes de Temps realizzato dall’Institut de Recherche et de l’Innovation del Centre Georges Pompidou di Parigi per quanto concerne i film studies
