Calcium is a fundamental intracellular messenger involved in a wide range of different signalling pathways in all eukaryotes. In plants, Ca2+ has been shown to participate in the transduction of a large plethora of environmental stimuli of both abiotic and biotic nature. A complex Ca2+ homeostatic and signalling machinery allows for a tight regulation of the intracellular concentration of the ion ([Ca2+]) and its variations during signal transduction.
