Il disegno di ritratto nell'Italia settentrionale (1480-1530). Storia, tecniche e questioni attributive

The present work has as its subject an in depth study of the autonomous portrait drawings, a black chalk production that spread mainly in northern Italy between 1480 and 1530. The research started in Mantua, then moved to Venice and Milan. It offers a catalog that follows the standards in use in the main collections of European drawings and a detailed analysis of historical and artistic sources (letters and documents of various kinds), in order to define the characteristics, consistency and destination of use. The research focussed on drawings of uncertain attribution and much discussed chronology and it involves artists whose biographies are not well known, and this required demanding reconstruction hypotheses. The comparative study of the materials allowed to propose numerous attribution and chronological revisions and to recover unpublished drawings and drawings that were not well known prior to this research.. In particular, a new shape was proposed in the catalog by Francesco Bonsignori and Ambrogio De Predis. The technical aspect was immediately brought to attention, and it was also addressed using laboratory observations, the results of which provided a basis for discussion with chemists, conservators and restorers in an interdisciplinary context. The analysis of the techniques used in these drawings required an extensive treatment of black and red chalk and of the complex querelle on dry coloring involving the relationship between Leonardo and Jean Perréal.Il presente lavoro ha come oggetto lo studio approfondito dei disegni autonomi di ritratto, una produzione a pietra nera che si diffonde soprattutto nell’Italia settentrionale tra il 1480 ed il 1530. La ricerca ha preso le mosse da Mantova, quindi si è spostata su Venezia e Milano. Si offre una catalogazione conforme agli standard in uso nelle principali collezioni di disegni europee e un’approfondita analisi delle fonti storiche (carteggi e documenti di varia natura) e storico-artistiche, allo scopo di definirne le caratteristiche, la consistenza e la destinazione d'uso. La ricerca ha discusso disegni di attribuzione e cronologia molto discusse ha studiato artisti dalla storia ancora poco assestata che hanno richiesto impegnative proposte di ricostruzione. Lo studio comparato dei materiali ha consentito di proporre numerose revisioni attributive e cronologiche e di recuperare all’attenzione disegni poco noti o inediti. In particolare è stata proposta una nuova fisionomia al catalogo di Francesco Bonsignori e Ambrogio De Predis. Si è da subito imposto all’attenzione l'aspetto tecnico, che è stato affrontato valendosi anche di osservazioni di laboratorio i cui risultati hanno fornito una base di discussione con chimici, conservatori e restauratori in un’ottica interdisciplinare. L’analisi delle tecniche in uso in questi disegni ha richiesto un’ampia trattazione dalle pietre nere e rosse e della complessa querelle sul colorire a secco che coinvolge il tema dei rapporti tra Leonardo e Jean Perréal
