Continuously variable transmissions (CVT) provide seamless gear shifting in vehicle operation, allowing the engine to operate at a nominal speed range resulting in lower fuel consumption, high efficiency and low emissions. However, these transmissions suffer from low efficiency, low torque handling capabilities and a high noise level. The hydromechanical transmission (HMT) combines the continuous variability of the gear ratio with the high efficiency of a mechanical transmission, providing potential benefits for road and off road vehicles.
