Breeding and technical innovations have enhanced the potential yields, and thus the N requirements, of modern crops. Unfortunately, extensive use of synthetic fertilisers has increased the impact of agriculture on the environment. Chemical fertilisers have high energy costs and can increase losses from the N cycle, with consequent water pollution (NO3-) and emission of GHG (N2O). Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is a primary target for development, food safety and environmental sustainability.
