A survey of certain aspects of teacher education in some church-related colleges and universities in Texas

Although the present study is primarily interested in investigating the church-related college from the standpoint of its training program for the students who will enter the ranks of teaching personnel for the public schools of Texas, the study has been made upon the premise that the entire institution is the responsible agent for the type of graduate or ex-student who emerges from the college. While most of the colleges have education departments that are in most instances doing an effective type of training in their professional courses, it is feared that these departments are still maintained largely to meet the certificating requirements of the State Department of Education rather than to provide adequate professional education for teachers. Without trying to raise a controversial question relative to the purpose of professional courses in the college curriculum of any institution either public or private, it is the purpose of this study to treat this aspect of the training program as an integral part of the whole curriculum. In order to bring attention to the more salient aspects of teacher education as found in the church-related college in Texas, the present study has the following objectives: 1. To present certain historical and institutional characteristics of the church-related college that might be significant for a proper understanding of their contribution to the education of teachers for the public schools. 2. To survey according to certain generally recognized methods and techniques the personal and professional character of the faculties found in the church-related colleges of Texas. 3. To portray as accurately as possible certain aspects of the student personnel enrolled in undergraduate courses in education in the church-related colleges. 4. To discover certain curriculum and professional education trends found in these institutions. 5.
