GAME THEORY AND MATHEMATICS: TRANSDISCIPLINARY SKILLS TO READ INTO REALITY

The world of the economy is a strongly impacting theme in young people’s life and is important in the orientation activities towards university studies. The economic theme is coherent with the guidelines of the projects developed by the Math Department of the University of Salerno (Italy) that aim to bring mathematics as cultural glue, a bridge between the two cultures in the curriculum, the humanistic and the scientific one, a transdisciplinary mathematics that is closely interconnected with the experiences of everyday life. In our paper, we will present The Game Theory Lab, a training course for in-service teachers to provide them with tools, models and examples that they can re-propose in the classroom in order to address economic issues, even if they are not included in the programs of Italian high schools, with the intention of giving interpretations to the events of contemporary society. In fact, in game theory a “game” is a model of any real-world situation where autonomous individuals make choices, and their choices have an impact on others. Creating models to describe and predict behaviour is useful in any fields because it allows scholars to systematically study the potential outcomes of a wide variety of scenarios
