It is therefore only natural that the fi rst female readers were noble women, oft enmembers of religious orders. In the Renaissance period Bohemia, numerous noblewomen together with literate female burghers were interested in reading. In the Enlightenment period, thanks to the establishment of public schools, the number of literate women increased.
