At the outset of the article, selected tendencies and phenomena encountered in the piety of the late Middle Ages – which directly or indirectly influenced the shaping of the liturgical life of the Reformation period – were briefly presented. Next, in the core part of the paper, two basic types of the Lord’s Supper liturgy, which were formed in the first years of the Reformation, were discussed: these are the so-called ‘Mass’ and ‘Upper German’ types. The genesis, the formation process and structure of the most significant prototypes of the Supper liturgy are presented without a detailed analysis of numerous rites modelled based on them.
