As a consequence of a more general spatial turn, involving different interests and disciplines, space has received considerable attention in narratological research in recent times. Building on cognitive-oriented narratological models, centering around the concepts of consciousness and experience, the paper reexamines the traditional distinction of narration and description and considers the possibility of applying the distinction between two fundamental ways of conceptualizing space proposed within different theoretical approaches (lived space vs. abstract space; tour vs. map; projective vs. topological locations, hodological vs. cartographic space etc.) to Herodotus’ historical and geo-ethnographical discourse
