Human rights are examined from different perspectives: as "moral rights", i.e. an ideal of justice, and as "legal rights" protected by domestic, European and international law. Above all, the book describes the 'genealogy' of the idea of fundamental rights, from the ancient universalisms, through the Roman conception of person and the historical development of their protection. Among the topics: Humanitas and persona in the classic Roman jurisprudence, Constitutionalism, Dignity and constitutional values, Europe and human rights. The volume originates from lectures and research at the chair of Roman Foundations of European Law at the University of Urbino
