The author aims to present the development of the centres of Arabic science, education and translation from the 9th century until the present. The article offers a brief outline of the history of the main scientific centres, beginning with Bayt al-Hikma ("The House of Wisdom") in Baghdad (830) through Madrasat al-Asun ("The School of Languages") in Cairo (1836) up to the modern Academies of Arabic Languages in the four capitals of the Arabic world. In the conclusion, the author underlines the importance of these institutions in building the Arab civilization and notes the farsighted politics of the Abbasid caliphs that enabled this process
