Is East Asia ready for a common currency?

Głównym celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza integracji monetarnej (a w zasadzie finansowej i monetarnej) w Azji Wschodniej w kontekście teorii optymalnego obszaru walutowego stworzonej przez Roberta Mundella w 1961 roku. Jako mechanizm porównawczy zostanie wykorzystana strefa euro, ze względu na fakt, że to jedyny obszar, gdzie wspólna waluta istnieje, stojąc zresztą obecnie przed poważnymi wyzwaniami. W kontekście kryzysu w strefie euro integracja finansowa i monetarna w Azji Wschodniej wydaje się złym pomysłem. Co jednak jest zaskakujące, ze względu na fakt, ze kryzysy gospodarcze prowadzą zwykle do wzrostu nastrojów protekcjonistycznych w gospodarkach, Azja Wschodnia zintensyfikowała wysiłki integracyjne właśnie po azjatyckim kryzysie gospodarczym z lat 1997-1998. W artykule omawiane są korzyści i wady możliwej integracji monetarnej w Azji Wschodniej, przeprowadzona jest też próba oceny możliwych scenariuszy integracji w tym obszarze.The main goal of the paper is to analyze monetary integration (or rather the financial and monetary) in East Asia in the context of the Optimum Currency Area theory created by Robert Mundell in 1961. European perspective will be used as a comparative basis, as this is the only one, where common currency exists, having a lot of troubles at the moment. In the aforementioned context (namely Euro zone crisis), financial and monetary integration in East Asia seems definitely a bad idea. What is surprising, East Asia has been integrating since the Asian Economic Crisis, what is somehow unexpected, bearing in mind that economic crises usually lead to strong protectionist resentments. Advantages and disadvantages of possible monetary integration in East Asia will be presented and prospects for the future analyzed
