Iranian Armenians : the largest Christian community in the Islamic Republic of Iran

The article explores the status and situation of Armenian community in contemporary Iran. Armenians are the largest Christian minority which is one of the three recognized religious minorities in the country according to the 1979 constitution of Islamic Republic of Iran. The study presents the relationship between Armenians and the Shi’i state, sociopolitical condition of the community and its contemporary problems concerning education, language, religious life etc. Describing the present situation the article focuses mostly on the Tehran community which is the largest Armenian community of modern Iran. As a background, the brief history of Armenian settlement in Iran is also presented.W artykule przeanalizowano status oraz sytuację społeczności ormiańskiej we współczesnym Iranie. Według konstytucji Islamskiej Republiki Iranu z 1979 roku Ormianie są jedną z trzech uznanych mniejszości religijnych w tym kraju. Artykuł prezentuje ich relacje z państwem szyickim, kontekst społeczno-polityczny oraz współczesne problemy, m.in. w dziedzinie edukacji, języka i życia religijnego. Szczególna uwaga została poświęcona społeczności ormiańskiej - największej społeczności Ormian we współczesnym Iranie. Jako tło zaprezentowany został szkic historii osadnictwa ormiańskiego w tym kraju
