This paper concerns descriptive and deferred uses of indexicals. I argue that, contrary to prevalent opinion, the former do not form a class of the latter and propose an analysis of descriptive uses by a postulated mechanism of descriptive anaphora. Having separated these two phenomena, I focus on cases that seem to require an analysis that combines both deferred reference and descriptive anaphora in the interpretation of one use of a pronoun
