Le bar rural en Bretagne : du lieu d'alcoolisation au lieu de sociabilités

The weak situation of rural trade is highlighted by closures which threaten the attractiveness of rural territories and disadvantage people that are the least able to move. This situation also makes possibilities of meetings between inhabitants decrease. However, despite this context, rural bars are remaining numerous. It is often by diversifying the range of services, and even by offering alternative and original activities, such as bookshop, organization of evening-debates and concerts, or by participating in a tourist promotion network. This paper aims to present the first elements of a PhD project concerning bars in rural areas. After having shown the specificities of bars in Brittany, the second part highlights the lack of geographers in the scientific production about this topic. It is thus a question, in a last time, of indicating the direction which will be followed during the PhD. The guiding principle of this one appears to be how social link grows up in appropriated interaction places. The project's interest lies in the fact that it pays special attention to the role of these places in inhabitants' everyday life, in particular when they answer to problems which can emerge in rural areas, isolation for example, while contributing to animation in villages and in integrating new inhabitants and people passing through not for long (tourists and hikers for example).La situation fragile du commerce rural s'exprime par des fermetures qui menacent l'attractivité territoriale et pénalisent les populations les moins mobiles, tout en diminuant les possibilités de rencontres entre habitants. Pourtant, même dans ce contexte, les bars ruraux se maintiennent. Mais c'est souvent en élargissant leur gamme de services, voire en proposant des activités alternatives et originales, comme la vente de livres, l'organisation de soirées-débat et de concerts, l'inscription dans une réseau de promotion touristique... Cet article a pour but de présenter les premiers éléments d'une thèse portant sur ces débits de boissons en milieu rural. Après une première partie qui présente les spécificités de la Bretagne en matière de bars, la deuxième partie met en évidence la faible place des travaux de géographes dans la littérature scientifique sur les bars ruraux. La troisième partie a donc pour objectif de tracer les grandes lignes du questionnement envisagé. Les bars ne sont pas pensés comme des lieux d'alcoolisation mais comme des lieux d'interactions sociales importants. Ils répondent en effet à des problèmes tels que l'isolement, sensible en milieu rural, tout en contribuant à l'animation des villages et à l'intégration des nouveaux résidants et des usagers plus occasionnels de ce milieu (randonneurs et touristes par exemple)
