This contribution concerns the role of religion in the context of cultural-majoritarian identity politics. Such identity politics aims at the conservation and protection of what is construed as ‘national identity’ or cultural identity of the predominant majority in society. I analyse the role of religion in such identity politics, both as cultural basis of society and as ‘significant other’ that is framed as ‘foreign’ and not really belonging to society and ‘national identity’ respectively. Finally, I investigate whether and to what extent particular forms of cultural-majoritarian identity politics are at odds with an egalitarian understanding of the right to freedom of religion
