The gram-negative bacterium Campylobacter is the leading cause of bacterial entero-colitis in humans and is associated with the occurrence of life-threatening auto-immune based neurological disorders. Chickens, which are often heavily colonized with Campylobacter without signs of pathology, are considered the most important source for human infection. Although vaccination is a well established and effective method to combat various microbes in poultry, a commercial vaccine against Campylobacter has not yet been developed.
