The secondary school reform made by Law No. 13415 of February 16, 2017, promoted considerable alterations to the functioning of this stage of education in Brazil. However, research shows that Brazilian secondary education, since the beginning of the institutionalization of teaching, has been attempting to establish its own identity, mediated by legislation that seeks the transformations in the changes to the curriculum, the way of teaching, the duration time, and the conceptions of teaching. This text aims to analyze the contexts of drafting and approving Law No. 5.692/71 and Law No. 13415/17.
