The definition of sound intensity as a complex quantity, where the real part coincides with the active intensity vector known from classic textbooks and the imaginary part is related to local oscillatory transport of energy, is still a controversial problem. To overcome this impasse, this work exposes a solid physical foundation to the concept of complex sound intensity and proposes a device for measuring the complex sound intensity in 3-D from the wave impedance.
