Background. Leishmaniases (VL) represents a major health problem. The first part of the thesis evaluates by molecular techniques and cytokine analysis the prevalence of asymptomatic Leishmania infections in autoimmune rheumatic patients treated with biological drugs and living in Leishmania endemic foci in Italy. In the second part, the effect of the niacin analogue, 6-AN on Leishmania parasite growth and metabolism using the metabolomics technology was investigated.
