The main topic of this thesis is to explore the possibilities offered by the orthogonal valence bond (OVB) approach in order to get new insights in the nature of the electronic structure of molecules. This approach constitutes a new and original way of thinking, which aims to re-establish the importance of quantum chemistry as a subject able to rationalize, interpret and modeling, and not only as a powerful computational spectroscopy producing accurate data (which is very important, as well). This target is truly ambitious, and what is reported here, together with a few recent other studies, represents a first pioneering exploration in this territory.
