Metformin has been used clinically as the first-choice drug to treat type 2 diabetes patients. It is not metabolized in liver and the residue which is excreted unchanged in the urine. Identification and quantification of metformin in the urine can be used as a unique marker for the metformin treated diabetic patients. The aim of our study was to identify residual metformin in the urine of type 2 diabetic rats using quantitative spectral deconvolution of 1H NMR method.
