STUDENTS’ ANXIETY IN PUBLIC SPEAKING USING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The objectives of this research are to discover what makes students have anxiety in Public speaking using the English language and to discover how students overcome their anxiety in public speaking using the English language. The researcher uses a sequential explanatory approach which means quantitative data are collected and analyzed, followed by qualitative data. The subjects of this research are undergraduate and postgraduate English students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang in the year 2018-2021. Data collection techniques that are used in this research are questionnaires and open-ended questions. The researcher distribute quantitative questionnaires to 30 students and did the open-ended question to two students with the highest score level of anxiety and the lowest score level of anxiety, then the data is analyzed by using some related theories. The conclusions of the research, there are six causes of public speaking anxiety namely, lack of vocabulary, word choice, formal situation, people stare, fear of being judged, and the last cause is blank. There are five ways to overcome a student’s anxiety in public speaking namely, multiply literacy, speaking practice, mastering your topic, regulating breathing, and the last one is fidgeting
