STUDENTS' PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF ENGLISH SUBTITLED MOVIES FOR VOCABULARY LEARNING

Vocabularies are the foundation of a language. Learning vocabulary is important for students who learn a foreign language, especially English. Having a rich vocabulary can support them in four English skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. To help students learn vocabulary, they can use learning media that fits their needs. English subtitled movies are one of the media that can be used by students to learn vocabulary. This media can introduce words that students might never know, so it can assist them in acquiring new vocabulary. Therefore, this study aims to investigate students’ use of English subtitled movies in learning English and their perception of using English subtitles movies for vocabulary learning. This study was done because none of the previous studies focused on the students’ side to investigate their perception or opinion on using English subtitles movies for vocabulary learning. The researcher used a descriptive quantitative to analyze data. The data came from 50 students majoring in English Education at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang academic year 2018 as the respondent to the questionnaire and 5 representative students became the interviewee. To collect data, the researcher used questionnaires and interview guidelines as instruments. The findings showed that most of the respondents use English subtitle movies in learning English vocabulary to practice listening skills, motivating them to speak, and imitate native speakers’ accents. In addition, respondents’ perception of using English subtitled movies for vocabulary learning showed a generally positive response. They claimed that English subtitled movies could provide new words that they never knew before, so it can help students to enhance their vocabulary. Finally, the respondents of this study reported feeling that English subtitles can be a tool for learning English and vocabulary
