A STUDY OF STUDENT'S DIFFICULTIES ON LEARNING VOCABULARY FACED BY LOW ACHIEVER STUDENTS AT SMP AMANATULLOH BANYUWANGI

ABSTRACT Vocabulary is one of the most essential skills to be mastered in English learning. Learning vocabulary is essential for everyone because vocabulary is the foundation of language learning and it is used to increase the students’ knowledge in learning language. This idea is supported by the fact that vocabulary is important in daily activity as it is the basic language to speak. Nevertheless, there are several difficulties in learning English vocabulary, especially for Indonesian students who are not a native speaker of English. Hence, the researcher conducted a research in relation to the difficulties in learning vocabulary and how the students solve their problem. The researcher used descriptive qualitative as a research design in order to gain rich information and in detail to answer the research questions. Additionally, this research aimed to describe the students’ difficulties in learning vocabulary at eighth grade in SMP Amanatulloh Banyuwangi. Departing from the observation and the questionnaire answered by the participants, there were two major difficulties in learning vocabulary, word spelling and word using. The problems encountered such as the students felt difficult to use the words appropriately and they also got difficulties in pronouncing the words correctly. The students also shared how to solve their current problems appropriately with students’ knowledge such as the students tried to find another to get more motivated in learning vocabulary
