PROBLEMS IN LEARNING VOCABULARY IN TWELFTH-GRADE STUDENTS AT SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 1 BABAT

This study aims to determine students' problems in learning English vocabulary and the causes of the problems in learning English vocabulary at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Babat. The researcher used a qualitative method with a narrative inquiry design. The data were collected through interviews. The subjects of this study were the twelfth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Babat. The researcher interviewed ten students. To conduct interviews, the researcher used interview guidelines in written questions consisting of 10 questions. Finally, the findings show that there are three types of student problems in learning English vocabulary, namely; (1) Weak short-term memory, (2) Different spelling leads to different pronunciations, and (3) Anxiety in making mistakes. The data also shows that there are three types of causes for students to experience vocabulary learning problems, including; (1) Monotonous learning, (2) Feeling lazy to learn English (3) Difficulty to focus on the learning process
