Ecosystems provide several benefits essential to human well-being, called ecosystem services (ES). In some cases, these ES may present trade-offs (provision of one ES increases while another decreases) or synergies (two or more ES change in the same direction). Analyzing and quantifying these relationships (trade-offs or synergies) at the ecosystem level remains a major scientific challenge fortheir sustainable management.
