Analyses texturales des micro-usures et des hypoplasies de l’émail dentaire chez les Rhinocerotidae actuels et fossiles (Mammalia, Perissodactyla) : inférences paléobiologiques et paléoécologiques

The Miocene epoch is a key period of the Cenozoic with major climatic and ecosystem changes, during which tropical forests in Eurasia were progressively replaced by grasslands and savannahs as the global climate deteriorated. Among large herbivore mammals, Rhinocerotidae are abundant and diverse components of Miocene terrestrial ecosystems, with species-rich assemblages frequently found in association in fossil-yielding localities. Despite this, rhinocerotids have been under-investigated in a paleoecological perspective thus far. The aim of this PhD thesis was therefore to propose an assessment or re-assessment of the dietary preferences and stress susceptibility of the main Miocene Rhinocerotidae from Europe, Iran (Maragheh), and Pakistan (Bugti Hills). Using complementary tooth-based methods (microwear textures [DMTA] and enamel hypoplasias), first calibrated in the five living rhinoceros species, was inferred the trophic paleoecology of 29 fossil rhinocerotid species, encompassing Rhinocerotinae (Rhinocerotina, Teleoceratina, Aceratheriina, and incertae sedis) and Elasmotheriinae (Elasmotheriina) from 21 localities spanning the entire Miocene (MN2–MN13). Clear differences between species, localities, and time periods were observed and placed in their phylogenetic and biostratigraphic context. The DMTA revealed mainly browsing and mixed-feeding behaviors throughout the Miocene, sometimes very different between associated species (niche partitioning), and sometimes very overlapping (interspecific competition). Hypoplasia was found to be a good marker of fine local conditions, sometimes quite distinct from the regional and global contexts. Combining the results of both methods suggests that taxa with more flexible feeding preferences (mixed feeders) were less affected by hypoplasia.Le Miocène est une période charnière du Cénozoïque avec des changements climatiques et écosystémiques majeurs, où les forêts tropicales d’Eurasie sont progressivement remplacées par des prairies et savanes herbeuses, à mesure que le climat global se dégrade. Parmi les grands mammifères herbivores, les Rhinocerotidae sont une composante abondante et diversifiée des écosystèmes terrestres du Miocène, avec des associations plurispécifiques fréquentes dans les localités fossiles. Pour autant, les rhinocérotidés ont très peu été étudiés en matière de paléoécologie jusqu’à présent. Cette thèse avait donc pour objectif de proposer une (ré-) évaluation des préférences alimentaires et de la susceptibilité aux stress des principaux rhinocérotidés du Miocène d’Europe, d’Iran (Maragha) et du Pakistan (Collines Bugti). A l’aide d’observations complémentaires focalisées sur les dents (textures de micro-usure [DMTA] et hypoplasies de l’émail dentaire), d’abord calibrées chez les cinq espèces actuelles de rhinocéros, a été inférée la paléoécologie trophique de 29 espèces de rhinocérotidés fossiles, appartenant aux Rhinocerotinae (Rhinocerotina, Teleoceratina, Aceratheriina et groupes basaux) et aux Elasmotheriinae (Elasmotheriina) et provenant de 21 localités couvrant tout le Miocène (MN2–MN13). Des différences nettes entre espèces, localités et périodes ont été observées et remises dans leur contexte phylogénétique et biostratigraphique. Le DMTA a révélé principalement des comportements brouteurs et mangeurs mixtes tout au long du Miocène, parfois très différents entre espèces associées (ségrégation de niche), et parfois très chevauchants (compétition interspécifique). L’hypoplasie s’est révélée être un bon marqueur des conditions locales fines, parfois bien distinctes du contexte régional ou global. La combinaison des résultats des deux méthodes suggère que les taxons aux préférences alimentaires plus généralistes (mangeurs mixtes) étaient moins affectés par l’hypoplasie
