During cortical maturation, sensory information processing is strongly regulated by experience during a developmental window called critical period (CP) of plasticity. CP closure is associated with accumulation of a dense extracellular matrix (perineuronal nets or PNNs) around parvalbumin (PV) interneurons. These cells play a crucial role in cortical plasticity and in vivo PNN enzymatic disruption in adult primary visual cortex (V1) was shown to open again plasticity.
