フィラデルフィア美術館蔵の日本の神像における樹種識別調査例 Wood Identification of a Japanese Deity Statue of the Philadelphia Museum of Art

International audienceThe acquisition of information on the species of wood sculpture in East Asia has attracted particular attention because it provides valuable information on the religious connections and cultural transmission not only in Japan but also in other East Asian countries. In this study, synchrotron radiation X-ray tomography at BL20XU of SPring-8 was applied to a very small sample taken from a statue of a Japanese Shinto statue in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to identify the species of Magnolia sp. The result of the study revealed that the statue was made from magnolia wood.東アジア地域における木彫像の樹種情報の獲得は、我々日本のみならず東アジア地域の宗教上の繋がりや文化の伝播などを知る上で貴重な情報であり特に注目されてきている。本研究では、フィラデルフィア美術館に所蔵される日本の神像から採取された非常に小さな試料に、SPring-8の BL20XU でのシンクロトロン放射光Ｘ線トモグラフィーを適用し樹種識別調査を行った結果、Magnolia sp. が使用されていることを明らかにした
