International audienceAccording to the Greek lexicon used in literary, epigraphic and numismatic evidence, the way Antinoos was built as a deity is not different from the way other supernatural powers are constructed. He was not a diuus for the Romans, and yet he was considered immortal in the religious practices of many cities of the Eastern Roman Empire, due to the interest he raised for political powers (Hadrian, supported by a few elite members). The Greek terminology used to designate him – hêrôs more often than theos – does not reveal how his ontology or his place within the divine worlds were conceived.
