Cinnamic acids comprise a diverse group of bioactive agents. They exhibit many biological activities e.g. anticancer, neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory etc. Several cinnamic acid derivatives are used as therapeutic agents, e.g. Tranilast – an anti-allergic drug, and Ozagrel – an anticoagulant. Cinnamic acids are the precursors of coumarins, another group of highly bioactive agents, exhibiting antioxidant, antiviral and anticancer activities, among others.The term “multifactorial diseases” is used to describe those cases where several biological targets are implicated in the development of a pathological condition.
