The photograph was taken by Don Hamerman, who was then a staff photographer for Unicorn Times, a monthly performing arts publication from Washington, D.C. Visible in the front row are Nathan Strejcek (in the striped shirt) and Ian MacKaye (his face partially obscured by the stage monitor), who were just starting a new band at that time, the Teen Idles. The Teen Idles were a notable part of the DC area hardcore punk subculture. MacKaye, along with Teen Idles bandmate Jeff Nelson, found Dischord Records in 1980 to release the debut EP by the Teen Idles. Dischord quickly became the defining punk record label for DC, issuing music by bands like Minor Threat (featuring MacKaye and Nelson), Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty, Fugazi (featuring MacKaye), and many others
