The solar updraft tower power plant (SUTPP) is a technology that combines wind and solar energy and has been proposed for future utility-scale installation in arid climates such as the southwestern United States. To assess its potential global warming impact and compare its life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions against alternative electricity sources, a geospatial life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed for a solar updraft tower energy system for ten different case study locations in five states in the Southwest United States: Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas.
