The disorders of consciousness (e.g., coma, the vegetative state) which often follow severe brain damage are the medical conditions which arguably pose some of greatest cost on developed societies—both in term of the economic cost and the suffering produced. While advances in the field of long-term intensive care has made the maintenance of life in patients recovering from brain injury highly feasible, little can be done to promote functional recovery in DOC patients who do survive with severe impairments in consciousness or cognitive functioning.
