OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of plasma levels of total cholesterol, low density lipoproteins (LDL), and high density lipoproteins (HDL) with the risk of developing Alzheimer disease (AD). BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested an increased risk of Alzheimer disease among subjects with high cholesterol levels during midlife. In addition, there is evidence that cholesterol lowering drugs (statins) may reduce the risk of dementia.
