Hydrogels are multifunctional biomaterials popularly used in a wide range of applications. In this thesis, calcium alginate hydrogels were thoroughly studied with a special focus on synthesizing calcium alginate hydrogel beads using a simple set up involving only a syringe and a gelation bath. By introducing an additional nonionic polymer component to the alginate solution during synthesis, the hydrogel beads exhibited greatly improved morphology with regard to uniformity and sphericity. These hydrogel beads also demonstrated excellent dye retention properties and stability in water.
