The diplomatic relations between the Medici Grand Duchy of Tuscany and Safavid Persia constitute a very interesting subject of study in the context of deepening of relations between Europe and what was called the ‘Levant.’ Although there were never any practical political or commercial consequences, the analysis of the Medicis’ ‘Persian diplomacy’ may still reveal something about diplomacy in the early modern period, its practices and, more generally, how Europe and Persia ‘looked at’ and related to each other. The documentation produced by the grand ducal secretariat in the course of more than a century of roughly regular interaction is incredibly rich and varied and even if some of it is already known, a very large part of it remains unexploited.The main aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the genesis and development of diplomatic relations between Tuscany and Persia in the seventeenth century through careful and scrupulous archive research and the continuous comparison of manuscript and printed sources with recent studies. The aim is to frame these relations within a broader Mediterranean and global context in which knowledge, the ability to gather information and, to a certain extent, the ambition to be able to project oneself beyond one’s own ‘local’ dimension, also played an important role. In addition to an in-depth analysis of Medici-Safavid diplomacy in the strict sense, the research also aims to provide a new ‘case study’ of modern diplomacy, its practices and networks. Finally, thanks to the identification of unpublished documentation, its comparative analysis with that which is known (and a reinterpretation of this through new perspectives) and the publication of several documents in the thesis, the research also aims to provide a solid corpus of sources on which to base further future research work.Les rapports diplomatiques entre le Grand-Duché de Toscane des Médicis et la Perse safavide au XVIIe siècle constituent un sujet d’étude très intéressant concernant l’approfondissement des relations entre l’Europe et ce qui était appelé le « Levant ». Bien qu’elle n’ait jamais donné lieu à des résultats politiques et commerciaux concrets, l’analyse de la « diplomatie persane » des Médicis peut néanmoins aider à mieux comprendre certains enjeux et pratiques de la diplomatie à l’époque moderne et, plus généralement, la manière dont l’Europe et la Perse se « regardaient » et se positionnaient l’une vis-à-vis de l’autre. La documentation produite par le Secrétariat grand-ducal au cours de plus d’un siècle de relations plus ou moins régulières est singulièrement riche et variée ; elle est aussi peu connue : une très grande partie de ces documents reste encore inexplorée. En faisant appel à des recherches archivistiques minutieuses, à la comparaison systématique des sources manuscrites et imprimées ainsi qu’à l’exploitation des études récentes, l’objectif principal de cette thèse est de reconstituer la genèse et le développement des relations diplomatiques entre la Toscane et la Perse au cours du XVIIe siècle. Cette recherche entreprend inscrire ces relations dans un contexte méditerranéen et global plus large dans lequel la connaissance réciproque, la capacité à rassembler des informations et, dans une certaine mesure, l’ambition de se projeter hors de sa propre dimension « localiste » jouaient un rôle également important. Outre une étude approfondie de la diplomatie stricto sensu, la recherche vise également à fournir un nouveau cas d’étude de la diplomatie moderne naissante, de ses pratiques et de ses réseaux. Enfin, avec la découverte de la documentation inédite, son analyse comparative avec celle déjà connue auparavant et sa réinterprétation ouvrant de nouvelles perspectives, ainsi qu’avec la publication de nombreux documents d’archives originaux, la thèse fournit également un solide corpus de sources historiques sur lequel fonder de futurs travaux de recherche
