Återbruk i byggprojekt: Arkitekten som förändringsagent

The Swedish building sector is the cause behind a large part of all generated waste in Sweden. This must change to reach the goal by 2030 to make a significant reduction of waste. One way to work towards this goal is to reuse existing material. The architect often contributes to early stages of the building process, which is an important timestamp to ensure that reuse becomes a part of the construction project. The role of the architect has the potential to contribute to current sustainability goals by urging reuse of building materials in projects. Therefore, this thesis aims to increase the understanding of architects' perception of their role in reuse practices in construction projects by answering how their work is similar to the characteristics of a change agent. The study also aims to explore how their role can develop to better urge reuse, with the help of theory of ​​change management. The study is limited to the architect role in the reuse practices in construction projects. Furthermore, it is the informal role as a change agent that is of concern since the architects’ profession does not appear to include the formal role as a change agent. Furthermore, in this study a connection between an informal change agent and an informal leader is made, because of the relation between change and leadership. A qualitative approach was chosen because the study has a purpose to better understand the architects' individual experiences and perspectives. The work is based on two literature studies, one contextual and one that contributes to a theoretical framework for the later analysis. Thereafter, an interview study was conducted with seven participant architects that are active in Sweden with experience or knowledge of reuse. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using the designed theoretical framework to encode and categorize the responses. The coding resulted in three separate tables with sorted quotes from the interviews. These tables were used to interpret the relationships between the sorted interview material and allow new themes to emerge from the analysis. After this thematization overall conclusions were drawn by interpreting the analysis from a holistic perspective. From the literature study it became apparent that a change agent, either formal or informal, can be anyone with the abilities to drive change. From the interviews evident connections were found between the architects’ reuse practices and the personal abilities that is necessary for a change agent to be successful. The architects’ descriptions about their reuse practices did not concern their own authority, which can be explained by that they lack the power to make decisions in the projects. But through their personality, communicative skill, and ability to solve problems, they can access both formal and informal authority, which is two other particularly key factors for a change agent. The analysis indicated that the architects’ role in reuse practices is essentially about influencing and convincing other actors in the building process. Beside the fact that architects have developed multiple of the personal abilities that a change agent needs, they also drive reuse practices voluntarily, which is an aspect that coincides with an informal leader. To conclude, the architect’s role in the matter can be described as a communicative informal change agent, even if no respondent referred themselves as a change agent. It seems that awareness of acting as a change agent is not the main motivator for acting as one, and thereby have a better potential to work with reuse. However, it is not the whole solution for the sustainability goals that architects act as change agents, but it can be a piece of the puzzle that promotes an increased work with reuse. Furthermore, communication and knowledge emerged as two core results for how the architect role can be developed to better drive reuse. All proposed development areas affect their gathered knowledge and ability to communicate, in some way. By enhancing their communication skills and knowledge, they have a greater opportunity to be convincing and thus have a stronger influence in construction projects. This applies not only to architects active in Sweden, but the results can also be applied to other professional roles without decision-making authority but who want to drive change in their organization. Svenska byggsektorn står för en stor del av allt genererat avfall i Sverige vilket behöver förändras för att uppnå målet om att betydligt minska mängden avfall till 2030. Ett sätt att arbeta mot målet är genom att återanvända, eller återbruka, befintligt material. Arkitekten är ofta med i byggprocessens tidiga skeden, vilket är en viktig tidpunkt för att se till att återbruk blir en del av projekten. Arkitektrollen har potential att bidra till dagens hållbarhetsmål genom att uppmana till att återbruka material i projekten, samtidigt som det finns utmaningar som försvårar nyttjandet av rollens potential. Därför syftar detta examensarbete till att öka förståelsen om yrkesverksamma arkitekters uppfattning om sin roll i ett återbruksarbete inom byggprojekt genom att svara på hur deras återbruksarbete liknar karaktärsdragen av en förändringsagent. Studien syftar även till att utforska hur de kan utvecklas för att bättre driva återbruksarbetet vilket görs med hjälp av teoriområdet om förändringsarbete. Studien avgränsar sig till enbart arkitektrollen i återbruksfrågan inom byggprojekt. Vidare avses den informella rollen som förändringsagent eftersom arkitektyrket inte förefaller innefatta den formella rollen som förändringsagent. Dessutom görs en koppling mellan informella förändringsagenter och ledare i denna studie på grund av relationen mellan förändring och ledarskap. Ett kvalitativt tillvägagångssätt valdes eftersom studien har ett förstående syfte om arkitekternas personliga erfarenheter och perspektiv. Arbetet tar avstamp i två litteraturstudier, en kontextuell för en ökad förståelse för arkitektrollen i Sverige och centrala begrepp, samt en litteraturstudie som bidrar till ett teoretiskt ramverk inför den senare analysen. Därefter utfördes en intervjustudie med sju deltagande arkitekter som är yrkesverksamma inom Sverige med erfarenhet eller kunskap om återbruk. Intervjuerna transkriberades och analyserades med hjälp av det utformade teoretiska ramverket för att koda och kategorisera svaren. Kodningen resulterade i tre separata tabeller med sorterade citat från intervjuerna. Dessa tabeller användes för att tolka sambanden mellan koderna och låta teman växa fram från analysen. Efter tematiseringen tolkades analysen från ett helhetsperspektiv för att dra slutsatser. Från litteraturstudien framkom att en förändringsagent, formell eller informell, kan vara vem som helst med förmågor för att driva en förändring. Utifrån intervjuerna kunde tydliga kopplingar göras mellan arkitektens återbruksarbete och de personliga förmågor som är nödvändiga för en förändringsagent att vara framgångsrik. Arkitekternas beskrivningar om deras återbruksarbete berörde inte deras egen auktoritet, vilket kan bero på att de inte har beslutsmakten i byggprocessen. Men genom deras personlighet, kommunikativa skicklighet och problemlösningsförmågan kan de få tillgång till formell och informell auktoritet, som är två viktiga faktorer för en förändringsagent. Analysen pekade på att arkitektens roll i återbruksarbetet handlar om att påverka och övertyga andra aktörer i byggprocessen. Förutom att arkitekterna har utvecklat flera av de personliga förmågorna som en förändringsagent behöver, driver dem även återbruksarbetet frivilligt, vilket är en aspekt som sammanfaller med en informell ledare. Sammantaget kan arkitektens roll i återbruksarbetet beskrivas som en kommunikativ informell förändringsagent, även om ingen arkitekt kallade sig själv för en förändringsagent. Det verkar således inte vara det viktigaste att vara medveten om konceptet förändringsagent för att agera som en sådan och därigenom ha bättre potential att arbeta med återbruk. Däremot är det inte hela lösningen för att nå hållbarhetsmålet att arkitekter agerar som förändringsagenter, men det kan vara en pusselbit som främjar ett ökat återbruksarbete. Vidare framkom kommunikation och kunskap som två kärnresultat för hur arkitekten kan utvecklas för att bättre driva återbruksarbetet. Alla föreslagna utvecklingsområdena berör på något sätt deras ihopsamlade kunskap och förmåga att kommunicera. Genom att förbättra sin kommunikation och kunskap har de större möjlighet att vara övertygande och därmed ha en starkare påverkan i byggprojekten. Detta gäller inte enbart för arkitekter verksamma i Sverige, utan resultaten kan appliceras på andra yrkesroller utan beslutsmakt men som vill driva en förändring inom sin organisation.
