Background Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is elevated in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and is associated with adverse outcome, but its relationship with myocardial fibrosis and other characteristics remains unclear. We sought to evaluate the effect of pirfenidone, a novel antifibrotic agent, on GDF-15 in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and identify characteristics that associate with GDF-15 and with change in GDF-15 over 1 year.
