This fact can be connected with numerous legends or tales concerning snakes who eat grass or herbs, especially medicinal herbs. Particular notice should be taken of some testimonies about snakes whose temperament is modified by the herbs they are supposed to eat. Still, all this does not tell us why the Ancients have thought that snakes can eat plants; two different kinds of arguments can be brought to bear: first, the scattered elements of a theory of venom and temperament have played a part; secondly, Aristotelian texts show that the Ancients were aware of the fact that snakes eat preys that are very bulky compared to their own size, and this observation led them to lend to the snakes the reputation of being gluttonous. They have been henceforward believed to be able to eat anything, including grass. As a conclusion, we try to reflect on the implications of what is for us an example of an "impossible biology", the like of which are not seldom in Ancient Science.Beaucoup de plantes de l'Antiquité s'appellent d'après un nom de serpent. Ce fait est peut-être à mettre en rapport avec de nombreuses légendes ou récits concernant des serpents mangeant de l'herbe, en particulier des herbes médicinales. Une place à part doit être faite à quelques témoignages, isolés mais éclairants, à propos de serpents dont le tempérament est modifié par les herbes qu'ils absorbent. Tout cela ne nous explique cependant pas pourquoi les Anciens avaient cru que les serpents mangeaient de l'herbe ; les raisons sont à chercher à la fois dans les éléments épars d'une théorie du venin et du tempérament et dans certaines observations dont les textes aristotéliciens notamment nous laissent supposer l'importance : les serpents, capables d'ingérer des proies très grosses en comparaison de leur taille, ont eu la réputation d'être gloutons, et donc de pouvoir tout manger, y compris de l'herbe. En conclusion, on s'efforce de réfléchir aux attendus de ce qui est pour nous une " biologie impossible "
