Une abbaye chef d'ordre face à deux cités : les chanoines réguliers de Saint-Ruf à Avignon et Valence

National audienceMisadventures and Misfortunes of an Abbey at the Head of the Order: Saint-Ruf's Regular Canons from Avignon to Valence. Saint-Ruf Abbey was one of the first canonical foundations to implement the reform of the clergy wanted by Hildebrand/Gregory VII. It represents an extraordinary field of investigations if one wants to assess the place occupied by regular canons in the city's society and economy. The first century of Saint-Ruf in Avignon is characterised by hostile relationships between the head of the order built around an abbatiola situated in the outskirts of the city, and the city itself, particularly the episcopal chapter. The crisis, which started at the end of the 11th century, was put to an end by the transfer in the 1150s of Saint-Ruf Abbey to Valence, another episcopal city. Until the end of the 13th century, the economy of the new head of the order, also located outside the walls of the city, largely followed the Cistercian "model" (barns, vineyards and flocks were established and the driving force of canals was used). Its activities as hospitable institution, its ties with the bishops and obedience within the city walls (Saint-James) linked Saint-Ruf to the city even if the abbey did not take part in the supervision of the congregation. Ties with the local bourgeoisie were progressively strengthened. The shift to a canonical economy wich relied more and more on private income, after a wave of tenures, intensified the involvement of regular canons in the city's economy. The withdrawal of the convent to the urban priory of Saint-James at the end of the 14th century makes it impossible to talk about inurbamento, inasmuch as it was a temporary solution due to unrest. Besides, this solution was adopted by a convent which was usually eager to keep its autonomy from urban powers.L'abbaye de Saint-Ruf, une des premières fondations canoniales à mettre en oeuvre la réforme du clergé voulue par Hildebrand/Grégoire VII, constitue un terrain d'investigations exemplaire pour évaluer la place prise par les chanoines réguliers dans la société et l'économie urbaines. Le premier siècle de Saint-Ruf à Avignon est marqué par des relations d'hostilité entre le chef d'ordre constitué autour d'une abbatiola suburbaine et la cité, en particulier le chapitre cathédral. Cette crise ouverte dès la fin du XIe siècle se conclut par le transfert de l'abbaye de Saint-Ruf vers Valence, une autre cité épiscopale, dans les années 1150. Jusqu'à la fin du XIIIe siècle, l'économie du nouveau chef d'ordre, situé lui aussi hors les murs de la cité, emprunte beaucoup au "modèle" cistercien (granges, vignes, troupeaux, utilisation de la force motrice des canaux). Les activités hospitalières, les liens avec les évêques, la possession d'une obédience intra muros (Saint-James) rattachent Saint-Ruf à la ville, mais l'abbaye ne prend pas part à son encadrement paroissial. Progressivement, les liens avec les bourgeois se renforcent et le passage à une économie canoniale plus "rentière", après une vague d'accensements, accentue la participation des chanoines réguliers à l'économie urbaine. Le repli du couvent dans le prieuré urbain de Saint-James à la fin du XIVe siècle ne permet toutefois pas de parler d'inurbamento dans la mesure où il s'agit d'une solution provisoire motivée par des troubles, adoptée par un couvent généralement jaloux de son autonomie à l'égard des pouvoirs urbains
