Chapitre 1 du livre Regards sur la villeInternational audienceThis chapter proposes a survey of recent literature on the analysis of metropolitanization, with a main focus on the economic approach of the phenomenon. The basic statements of metropolitanization, appeared at the beginning of 90's, are clarified: metropolitanization was conceived as the spatial translation of globalization, which has induced changes in the productive systems. Two main categories of recent deepenings are identified and analized. The first relates to the identification of the specific role of metropolises within the globalization context and relies on the analysis of metropolitan functions of coordination, command and control. The third explores the geography of metropolitan globalization, and stresses the selectivity of metropolitanization dynamics at a worldwide scale and their recent changes, specifically the rise of Asian metropolises.Ce chapitre propose une revue des travaux récents sur l'analyse de la métropolisation, en privilégiant l'approche économique du phénomène. Les fondements de cette problématique, apparue au début des années 90, sont explicités : la métropolisation a été conçue de manière privilégiée comme la traduction spatiale de la globalisation des économies et des mutations induites des systèmes productifs. Deux grandes catégories d'approfondissements récents sont traités. La première concerne l'identification du rôle spécifique des métropoles dans la globalisation et renvoie à l'analyse des fonctions métropolitaines de coordination, de commandement et de contrôle. La deuxième explore la géographie de la globalisation métropolitaine, et met l'accent sur la sélectivité des dynamiques de métropolisation à l'échelle mondiale et leurs mutations récentes, notamment la montée en puissance des métropoles asiatiques
