International audienceThis paper focuses on the phenomenon of synthetic diminutive and attempts to illustrate its formation and presence in speech acts. Eighteen languages are considered, six inflected, six agglutinative and six analytic. Diminutives are produced in several syntactic categories with prefixes, suffixes or combinative affixes and either show diminution and/or tenderness. Their absence in most analytic languages and their variation in meaning and use in all other language types reflect their morphological and typological complexity.
