This work is inscribed in the growing public concern for animal suffering and flourishing, but against what I think to be a self-serving (hence popular) strand in animal ethics, insofar as it only aims at improving the well-being of animals without contesting the system of exploitation enslaving them. I defend the views of philosophers and activists advocating for an equal consideration of all sentient beings, humans and nonhumans, and therefore for the abolition of the blatant exploitation of animals. A traditional interpretation of this egalitarianism has been to formulate theories of animal rights following the logic of human rights.
