The purpose of this work is to identify and define a literary sub-genre which uses fiction to transmit scientific knowledges: the novels of popular science. This hybrid genre, both didactic and fictional, appeared during the Second French Empire and remained active until the end of the nineteenth century. This group of texts, distinct from the classical forms of popular science which do not resort to fiction, has in common an history and shares multiple characteristics: those novels seem to have, more or less, the same model, 'l'histoire de', phrase which is also used in many titles (Histoire d'une bouchée de pain, Histoire d'une comète, Histoire d'une maison…).The standardization of the genre is the result of the active involvement of publ...
