Background Council Framework Directive 89/391 / EEC of 12 June 1989 lays down general principles in the field of occupational safety and health. Objective To review in detail occupational health systems in some EU member states, including the United Kingdom and adding Switzerland, and to identify their most remarkable aspects. Methods A questionnaire on the organization of occupational health protection, containing 41 open questions, was developed and sent to occupational health professionals with professional experience in one of the 28 EU countries or in Switzerland.
